The #1 Gay Fiction Best Seller, Body of Water, is the first novel in the Orcadian Trilogy, and 1 of 10 books long-listed for the Polari First Book Prize for a first book which explores the LGBT experience

“Fear the water.”

Leven has never forgotten his mother’s terrible warning. So how can he explain his strange attraction to water, his powerful sensitivity to it, his extraordinary ability to swim as though possessed?

Water is Leven’s natural element.

And it’s water that takes the one he loves and destroys everything he’s ever called his own.

Set on the Orkney Islands in the mysterious realm of Selkie mythology, Leven’s story of lost identity, lost love, and the search for redemption leads him from London to a terrifying meeting with the dark and volatile man who will change his heart forever.

Something in the water is coming for Leven.

But can a man born of chaos ever calm the storm?

Slightly overpriced for its length this M/M romance-fantasy novel is nonetheless a compelling and satisfying read.
It has some flaws which seem to be due to Mr Wakefield's inspiration taking sometimes the upper hand over his literary judgement but it also has the undeniable ability of plunging the reader straight into its fictitious world to have him come back to reality unwillingly.

The novel is slowly set in motion as a boy's coming of age story. Leven is an orphaned, conflicted child who finally finds loving foster parents. The supernatural elements are introduced gradually and transform Leven's story into something more mysterious but it is not until he arrives to the Orkneys that the fantasy/mystery element pervades the plot entirely. In the meantime we have come to love Leven, to know what makes him tick and what can hurt him (and the plot never drags).

I have never been to the Scottish isles but although Mr Wakefield does not indulge in lengthy descriptions I felt the Orkneys surround me as a wild, exotic fantasy setting made of ageless rocks, unending, cloudy skies and unrelenting waves, the perfect background for an element-based magic and for bringing raw passions to the fore. Leven will finally be able to discover the mistery behind his birth and find true love.
What sex scenes there are are explicit but always plot related and well executed.

Although the story is self contained this is clearly the first of a series and a second instalment is already announced.

On the minus side this work has some problems.
Several plot twists appear a bit contrived and characterization is sometimes erratic as if the author had written on impulse without taking the time to properly define plot and personalities beforehand. The supernatural element is engaging but not a little confused. While in "Elements of Love" (a short story by the same author) a lot was left unexplained but what hints were given were enough to get a consistent setting, here we get a lot of random details that are not easily framed into a clear, single picture.
Unfortunately I also felt the final confrontation with the villain and the ending to be somewhat rushed and not entirely satisfying.

The blurb intrigued me, and as I have a great fondness for all that goes towards making the Scottish islands special places, I bought BODY OF WATER. I started reading it as soon as I downloaded it to my . And couldn't put it down. BODY OF WATER is a fast-paced ride, with a powerful plot, strong and intriguing characters interacting in a fascinating setting, and it delivered everything I hoped it would. I'll be keeping my eye on this author, and if there's a sequel, I'll grab it so fast might have its fingers singed.
When I bagan reading this book, I din't know what to expect. I certainly didn't expect a touching, romantic sci-fi adventure with a healthy dose of steamy sex. This story is about as far from predictable as you can get. The main character, Leven, is troubled, heroic, funny and humble; in other words, he is complex. The journey he takes you on is a trial of self discovery and magical mystery, well worth the read.
I picked it because it had an Orkney setting, and I was interested in that. Much to my surprise, it was so much more. Fast-paced but not rushed, mysterious but with perfectly good reasons for it, erotic but not just another collection of sex scenes with a paper-thin narrative connecting them, good use of dialect that isn't jarring whenever you try to read it...I'm glad I got it.
I didn't know what to expect when i first got this book, i was unfamiliar with the author, but after reading the book overview, i was happy to give the book a try. And yes, i love it. the story was really good and Leven was so great. I would love to spend more time, lost in his wonderful world. Plus, the sex parts are very tasteful and quite graphic. Love the story, and would recomend it to anyone who wanted to enojy a good love story.
Though there were times I wasn't sure I wanted to continue to read, I kept having to come back. It's not the kind of book I normally read. The pacing is off-putting at times, and perhaps because it's not my usual genre, I wasn't always sure where the story was going. Lastly, the end seemed both rush and incomplete. And I still don't understand the Shaun thing. But all in all I enjoyed it and recommend it.
Refreshingly good for a gay themed novel. The story was diverse w/o loosing focus. I enjoyed reading the book and look forward to the next one.

A bit short but for the price it's pretty decent. Some of the plot twists seem to be forgotten as the main story emerged. The erotic scenes are descriptive without taking focus off the story and not at all over the top like a lot of other short novels out there. The author is clearly tellling a story with characters who just happen to be gay vs the gay theme being the focus.

Overall, it was a good read and I recommend it. Hopefully, the next one won't be too long in coming out. )
I do not know how I even came upon this book, but I am so glad I did the two main characters are wonderful. Leven has quite a bit of growing up to do as he is only 18 in this story, but as he is so young he is allowed to be both cruel and emotional and fall desperately in love all at the same time. The love story is out of the ordinary as both main characters are both strong and weak, and very little time spent developing their relationship over the course the the book which takes place over less than a week. But as rushed as it was I got the story.
