Book one of The Epherium Chronicles
Hope. Captain James Hood of the Earth Defense Forces remembers what it felt like. Twenty-five years ago, it surged through him as a young boy watching the colony ships launched by mega-corporation Epherium rocket away. He, like so many others, dreamed of following in the colonists' footsteps. He wanted to help settle a new worldto be something greater.
Then came the war...
Hope. During years of vicious conflict with an insectoid alien race, it was nearly lost. Though Earth has slowly rebuilt in the six years since the war, overcrowding and an unstable sun have made life increasingly inhospitable. When mysterious signals from the nearly forgotten colony ships are received, Hood is ordered to embark on a dangerous reconnaissance mission. Could humanity's future sit among the stars?
Hope. Hood needs it now more than ever. As secrets about the original colonists are revealed and the Epherium Corporation's dark agenda is exposed, new adversaries threaten the mission, proving more dangerous to Earth than their already formidable foes

The Epherium Chronicles Embrace eBook TD Wilson
This is the first book in a science fiction series, and is difficult to describe without adding spoilers. The background to the story is that the Epherium Corporation has sent out three expeditions to colonize nearby planetary systems, but after they departed, the Earth system was attacked by an alien civilization, the Cilik'ti. This was beaten off, and now the Earth Defence has built a huge warship to go out to help the colonists. Because it has developed a new form of travel, space folding, it can arrive at a reasonably promising time. Accordingly a crew of this ship, the Armstrong, is assembled. Perhaps the weakest part of this book is that at this point we get a lot of backstory for the characters, not all of it necessary, although some may be. Eventually, the expedition sets off towards Cygni, and we get some exciting writing. The writing is clear and easy to read, although I was struggling to find the relevance of the title "Embrace". The "science" was fairly standard regarding future weaponry, but that is fine. There was one scientific howler that is only too prevalent: once again, we find ourselves in an asteroid belt. What do you expect to find mainly in an asteroid belt? This may come as a surprise to some, but it is space. Asteroids are very thin and far between. You might accidentally collide with one, but you should not have to evade dozens, because if they were that close together the mass would be so high you would accrete a giant planet. Nevertheless, we can partly forgive this as it is an effort to generate excitement. The first half of the book is relatively low on tension, and is a cosy, steady start to the story, then suddenly it switches to quite high excitement, and goes in a direction the reader may not have been expecting. While this is the first of a series, there is an ending, even if the ending signals the start of a further story. Overall, I found this easy to read, it was interesting, and had there been a little more indication of the relevance of the first half of the book to the rest, with a bit of tension, I would have given it five stars.

The Epherium Chronicles Embrace eBook TD Wilson Reviews
A thoroughly enjoyable read - the author has a nice, flowing and easy writing style as he moves from seamless descriptions of fold-space drives to crime scenes and much more. Wonderful and vivid characters walk the pages of this space opera from the quick-minded and intelligent Captain Hood, to the genetically altered Security Chief, Maya Greywalker. This book is a mixture of corporate conspiracy, sabotage, murder - with red herrings along the way - and a mission to see whether the colony ships that left 25 years ago are thriving. All in all a very good beginning.
I don’t typically read sci-fi novels, but I decided to give this one a shot because it vaguely reminded me of a cross between Star Trek TNG, and Stargate SG1, and I liked both those series. It seems to me that this was a sort of typical space mission style story, but the author did a lot of research and put quite a bit of thought and detail into the world he created.
The Armstrong, Captained by James Hood, is the flagship of Earth Defense Forces, must travel to distant sectors of space, to make contact with colonies of civilization, making space-fold jumps, and avoiding alien attacks. Though some of the tech jargon was a bit over my head, I enjoyed the well thought out science behind it, and the action scenes were superb. I could really follow what was happening, and there was enough left the imagination.
Wilson is an excellent story teller in that he can craft intriguing characters and place them in highly unusual situations and still make it believable. There is plenty of details to really sink your teeth into, and various subplots that keep things interesting, while laying decent groundwork for future books in the series. Readers who enjoy Enders Game and The Seafort Saga will enjoy this series as well.
This book is an amalgamation of several different sci-fi tropes rolled into one. James Hood was a Captain in the Earth Defense Force, when humanity first ventured into space. Transported on their trip by rockets made by the Epherium corporation, the colonists set out to find another habitable planet for the human race to colonize. Then suddenly, ALIENS! Sorry. The remainder of the human race is thrust into a war against an alien race, which they eventually, and barely, survived. During and after the war, secrets about the Epherium Corporation are discovered, revealing what their plans for humanity really are.
First, I want to say that, even though I say that there are “several different sci-fi tropes”, there is a really good balance overall. None of the separate stories seem rushed, or smashed into the middle of the book, just because they could. The odd part is that all of this stuff is included, and it is only the FIRST VOLUME in a new series! The character of Hood is a compelling character, as well. Sure, he is the “savior of the human race”, and “everything rests on his shoulders”, but would you really want to read a story like this with an inconsequential main character? How boring would that be? “And Captain James Hood just kicked back and read a book, as the Earth was saved by someone who really should have a book written about them, to be honest…” …..Great, now I want to write that book…..
A somewhat straightforward start to a sci-fi series, that I am really excited about continuing in the future.
