In 1898, Gustave LeBon published The Crowd, in which he examined the underlying forces behind the many horrors of the French revolution. More than 100 years later, its premises may be traced to the rise of Hitler, Mussolini, Pol Pot, Mao Tse-Tung, and countless American and European leaders. Here is presented an expansion and update of his work, in the hopes that the mistakes of the past are not repeated. Within is a step-by-step manual for the acquisition of political power, as well as the defense against those who would use the knowledge for their own purposes.

The Collective is a book that successfully attempts to dive into the psyche of the collective mind. The topic itself isn't one that can be studied in the traditional research sense. The observations of the writer are ones that I hadn't myself observed, but having read through the book I can see that they are pretty well spot on.
The correlations he draws can be fairly well observed in the US political system today. He brings an interesting thought process to the people at the top of the political ladder in how they manage to remain where they are through the manipulation of the collective through mass entertainment masquerading as news.

The Collective William R Herr 9781479366712 Books Reviews
A thoughtful look at how the masses are manipulated and controlled by the elite. It's also a look at how one might climb away from the controls media and social conditioning impose on us, through education, knowledge and enlightenment (although not specified as such in his text).
His introduction of the Laws of Mental Unity, Cognition and Suggestibility, suggest that one who has studied Gustave Le Bon's work and applies these principles/concepts has a great advantage over the uneducated masses. Not an optimistic view for the future when one considers the type of individule or collective with the incentive to use them in a grab for power and control.
